Lesley Hulcoop- College Assistant
Welcome to Gzowski! I am a Trent University alumnus and have worked here in many different jobs since 1989!
My job is to help organize events and to keep on top of what's happening at the College. Please feel free to drop by the College office if you have any questions or would just like to chat about College life.

Melanie Buddle- College Head
Welcome to Trent and to Peter Gzowski College, where you will start your university experience in an amazing community. My name is Melanie Buddle and I am the Principal of Gzowski College.
While I can’t walk a tightrope or jump through a ring of fire, I can help you figure out what you need and what you want, during your first year of university! I am here to help you have a great year and to make sure that Gzowski College feels like YOUR community.
I have a PhD in History from the University of Victoria but I grew up in this area and my husband is a Trent grad. I started teaching at Trent in 2003. Now, in addition to my job as Principal of the college, I am also an academic advisor in Gzowski College.
You might recognize Gzowski College as the big yellow building on the east bank of the river. But a College is more than just a building – and this particular building is more than just a College! The building is called Enweying, which means “the way we speak together” in the Anishnaabe language. Enweying is home to Gzowski College but it is also home to the First People’s House of Learning (FPHL) and to four academic Departments: Business Administration, Economics, Mathematics and Indigenous Studies. For those of you who live in residence it is also your home.
It might seem strange that you are a University student but also a member of a College. College membership has more to do with your extracurricular life than with your specific degree program. We host academic events (academic skills and advising workshops, study skills, guest speakers, lecture series and artists) but your College membership is not attached to your area of study. You could be majoring in Biology, and your friends in the College could be majoring in Psychology or Cultural Studies. Our model ensures that you will get to know people in different academic disciplines. Think of your College as a place to meet people, study and chat, and get involved with events and activities that interest you.
Whether you live on campus or off campus, I hope you will take advantage of all that Gzowski College has to offer you. Throughout the year we host many events, ranging from craft sales to academic speakers to snowboarding competitions. There are many opportunities to get involved in student politics and social events, or just to come out to a dinner or a reading.
First-year University is a lot of fun and I have great memories of my first year. But it can also be challenging to be in a new place, away from home and family. If you need help or if you have questions, please come by to see us. Your College support team includes: the Head of College (me), the College Assistant (Lesley Hulcoop), Academic Advisors, and upper year students who can help answer lots of your questions.
We are here to help make first year a fantastic experience. Please don’t be a stranger! If you want to get involved in College life or if you have ideas about events you want to see happen, come and tell us about it. You’ll find us in Room 214 in Enweying/Gzowski College. It’s not quite a circus and we aren’t all that acrobatic but we can help you and we hope you will drop by. See you soon!
